“But he answered, β€œIt is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”‘ Matthew 4:4 (ESV)

“Open my eyes that I may see
wonderful things in your law.” Psalms 119:18 (NIV)

I have a confession. Maybe I’m not alone? I graduated College about 2 years ago (crazy!!), and found myself for the next year and a half really struggling to get into the Word. I would read it here and there, but not to the extent that I knew God was calling me to. I was seriously struggling, and my spirit felt it.

I even tried getting my hubby to wake me up early enough so that I could spend time with the Lord before work- but I swear, for a year and a half, sleep and schedules and plain laziness got the best of me. Ever been there?! But for some reason the Lord allowed it. He allowed me to go through that season, yet I could still feel Him, hear Him and follow Him. It was a season I DID NOT want to be in. A rut. But on I went, for a year and a half.

Then recently, at the beginning of a new season in my life- something changed drastically. Now, I seriously cannot go through my day without spending intentional time with the Lord. I feel as though the bones within me ache for His presence and intimate conversation. I know and feel deep within my soul, that I will not live this day to the fullest without having spent time with Him in the word.

And I’m so thankful for those feelings. Those urges to come to Him. I’ve been longing for them for a year and a half. I’ve realized just how life giving the Word of God truly is.

That’s why I love the above scriptures. The word is the very breath and heart of God- laid out for you and I. And I know that I’m speaking to your heart and mine, when I say that we friends cannot live by earthly bread alone. Our spirits NEED the bread of life. The Word of God.

We can encounter God’s Presence in the Word of God because it comes straight from Him, and because of His Holy Spirit that lives inside of us. But how?!

We don’t have to be Bible proficient. We don’t have to know it all. We don’t have to have it all together. Friends, we just have to be willing to come and receive.

When we carve out time, be disciplined and come to read the Word, here are some practical ways to Encounter His Presence in Scripture:

  • Pray before you even start reading. Ask God to open your eyes and heart to get something out of what you read today. Do you want to hear from Him, feel Him?! Ask Him for that.
  • Read from a Bible Plan, devotional, just flip to a page or ASK Him to tell you where He wants you to read today. No matter how you get to a passage, it doesn’t matter. ALL Scripture is life breathing- just start reading. (hint: if you are new to reading the Bible, a great place to start is the Book of John!)
  • Read through an entire chapter, or even more, so that you get the context behind what you are reading.
  • Be open, be willing and be still. God will speak to you in a unique way to you. You don’t have to force it. Just come as you are, ask Him to meet you there- and start reading! Encountering His presence may be learning something in scripture, having Him speak something to you or simply just spending time with Him as you seek Him through the Word! It’s not a formula, it’s the presence of God. He loves you.

I have definitely been in a rut before! This sounds silly, but the Bible that I got when I first became a Christian just did not feel like mine. I actually began reading only from the Bible app, and this didn’t happen too frequently. Recently for my birthday, one of my friends got me a hand painted journaling Bible. I absolutely adore it, and I read every day! I also got soft-cored colored pencils to highlight, and I made a key so that each color means something different. This has transformed the time that I spend reading my Bible!

Amanda, thank you SO much for commenting- we absolutely love it when you do!!! We love your blog! And wow. I love you story, having our own Bible is truly something special. But how blessed are we to have the scriptures available to us in so many different ways?! I am SO happy that you got such a gorgeous Bible that you have loved diving into, and I love the color coordinated studying. I’m all about color coordinating ;). What do each of your colors mean?!

I am praying that you will continue to find God richly as you pursue Him through the Word. I know you will find Him in new and perfect ways.

Red means Divine love, Yellow is end times and prophecies, green means identity in Christ, purple is living a life of worship and prayer, dark blue is the working of the Holy Spirit, and orange is what God wants us to do. :)

Amanda, um that is AMAZING!!!! How did you come up with those?! One of my all-time favorite classes in College were my Systematic Theology and Biblical Context classes- I geek out on that stuff.

I get my color coding from those classes and am in constant awe at JUST how much depth there is to Scripture. It is perfect at first glance, and yet so deep and rich when you start studying it. What a a great God that we serve!

Thank you Lanissa! I actually got most of those from a blog that I looked up online! I added the dark blue for the workings of the Holy Spirit because that was important to me. :)

So amazing!!!! I love your dedication and heart for studying! Let’s continue to grow deeper in Him together!! Can’t wait to get to know you better! :) And hopefully meet you in person one day!

I have felt this way so many times. I will start a devotional then miss like 2 weeks. It’s nice to know that even in the seasons of dryness, He is still there. 2 Timothy 2:13 has helped me a lot when I begin to get in a rut. “If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot disown himself.”

    Great post, Lanissa! :)

    • thebecomingministries says:

@mariahlynsmemoirs thank you SO much for commenting, we absolutely love getting to know you through our comments! WOW, amen to that Scripture!!! Because He is living in us, He cannot disown Himself. I am constantly learning and trying to receive that truth that He is full of love, forgiveness and nearness. He has never left, He has never condemned. Grace not perfection.

And you’re so not alone in missing devotionals- I think we’ve all been there ;) haha. I think we have so many great avenues to seek God deeper- but at the end of the day He is so much more concerned with our hearts and if we are seeking Him daily even if we’ve missed devos. What are some of your favorite ways to find what scripture to read?!

Amen! :) And some of my favorite ways to find scripture is either through picking a devotional or sometimes picking a topic then looking through the Bible.

A few months ago I was listening to Louie Giglio (My favorite!) from Passion City Church and he was doing a sermon series on Ephesians. He talked about the importance of Scripture memorization. So I began in the 1st book of Ephesians and started memorizing. I have 1:1-6 down, long way to go, but it is amazing to see how verses you memorize come to mind when you need them most! :)

SO nice to get to know you as well through your posts! I am really enjoying them! :-)))

Marilyn, WOW what an amazing endeavor! I absolutely love Louie Giglio and I would love to take that challenge with you!! What a powerful thing to renew our minds. We memorize so many other pieces of information- why miss Scripture?!

Thank you so much for all you’ve said in the past 4 devos! Every single one has been exactly where i was at life in that moment and it couldn’t have been even more straight from God!! I appreciate your hearts so much and how you cover heavy topics so honestly but yet with so much joy!! By letting God use you, He is teaching me that I don’t have to be perfect before the Lord and be afraid of messing up but just lying before Him, desiring Him alone for no other purpose is just enough! And it’s not a delicate balance or hard! We can’t hurt Him!! There is nothing we can do that will make Him love us more or less! THANK THE SWEET LORD! And that’s all He wants, and that when all the desires and confusion make sense, and that’s when we are full and complete!! I love that God is my Lord, husband, best Friend, Father, and savior! And I love how because of how He loves me, I can love Him and myself, and then base all my relationships off His and mine!! Thank you girls so much again! Love and inspired by you ladies!

    • thebecomingministries says:

Summer, thank you SO much for commenting and sharing a bit of your story with us! It is our absolute favorite to get to know you better and chat with you through our comments. And we are SO glad they have been just what you needed- what an encouragement girl!!

AND AMEN!!! I think that is one of my biggest desires as a woman, is to receive and know deep in my soul how God loves me and then to allow it to affect all of my relationships, even with myself. How beautiful our lives would be if we stopped placing so much condemnation on ourselves.

Our spirits long for His presence. Our bones long for Him!! Let’s continue to seek His grace instead of perfection together! What is one of your favorite ways to encounter Him?! Also where are you from!?

      xoxo,
      Lanissa
